Description
Create a beautiful, one-of-a-kind rug from old clothes and discarded fabric. No sewing is required with this flexible and forgiving braided-in technique. There are many design options and opportunities for experimentation with color and pattern.
Required Tools/Materials
-
Bring your old woven cotton fabrics: think old sheets and yardage of cotton and cotton blends, old men’s dress shirts, etc. Cotton blends are okay, as long as it’s at least about 60% cotton. When thinking about color and value, consider selecting fabrics in the categories of light, medium, and dark to create contrast and patterns, or bring whatever you have and experiment!
-
**Denim and knit fabrics are not ideal for this method.
-
A pair of fabric scissors
-
A clipboard for anchoring your rug in place
-
A small crochet hook is helpful
Physical Ability/Skills Needed
-
Ability to sit for awhile
-
Enough hand strength and dexterity to braid multiple strands of fabric
-
Enough vision or feeling to manipulate fabric.
